We take photos of our kids on their way out the door to the bus in the morning. Then we take a picture of THAT picture with our cell phone camera and then we process THAT picture with Instagram and post it online.
*Notice the use of the royal "we" above because I know it's not just me. Right? Right???? Bueller???

I turned 44 today. Not my favorite number but I'm going to embrace it. It's been a great day! But here's the best part. I requested a family photo shoot using my tripod and remote. My request was simple - no fighting or bickering, no fancy clothes, just wear what we had on, and smile.
And I love the results.

I spent last night doing the final edits on one family's shoot. LOVE this shot! I had to blur the name on the little guy's bag because it's the name of his dad's company. Our shoot was over and they were walking away and I ran back towards them to get this shot. So glad I did.
And then I started another family's shoot. LOVE these kids!
And I love this job. :)

I'll be around more next week, I hope. Right now, I'm editing photos every spare moment I can find. I have had the most fabulous families entrust me with their family photos this fall and I'm loving every moment of it. :)

A dear friend of mine has a milestone birthday today and I was able to do a mini-photo shoot for her today. Her mothers and her three sisters traveled all the way from Alabama to be with her for her birthday and I was honored to spend a bit of time with them this weekend.

I used to have a photography business. It became sucessful, everyone praised my photos and I made some money and some new friends. I stopped doing it after a couple of years so that I could go back to work full-time. And I've always wanted to go back to it. But every time that I have contemplated it, I realize more and more how lazy my photos are. I rely exclusively on natural light and that pretty much forced me to shoot outside almost all of the time when I was shooting for clients. And I knew enough to get some good shots almost all of the time, but I didn't know enough to get GREAT shots much of the time. I made clients happy with shots like these:
They're okay shots. But not great by any means. And I was never happy with the outcome. I definitely got better with time but I knew that it was partially luck that my shoots were going well. Weather conditions could still fluster me and I didn't know my camera well enough. I was very lucky that I didn't ruin more shoots than I did (two were nightmares and I had to do re-shoot them).
This past week, when I was in Vegas, I was stuck in a lot of low-light inside situations and I froze. I got some decent ones, some terrible ones, and some so-so ones. But, the panic I felt has stuck with me all week long.
So, I'm going back to the basics and then I'm going to push myself to use manual all the time on my camera. I'm going to be auditing Karen Russell's photography class this winter/spring and I am so excited! Before Karen's class starts, though, I'm also going to be re-reading and re-reading Katrina Kennedy's ebooks and tutorials at DesignerDigitals. Katrina is a master and I can't wait to dive back into her tutorials.

The last photo I took of the kids in their University of Texas gear was when Andrew was a newborn. I thought Tom was overdue for a new UT photo for his office.

I found more pictures of photo walls and am really loving this look!!! We used to have a photo wall on our old staircase but now I'm thinking of doing not just the staircase here, but the upstairs hallway and one in our master bedroom, too.
I've always used black and white photos with black frames (we think alike, Katrina!) but I am really loving some of these other combinations.
My foyer is eventually going to be yellow and probably the staircase as well. Love the yellow walls below with the black frames!
This is a really cool combination of frames but you'd have to use it with very simple furniture or maybe in a hallway so that it doesn't look too busy.
I love the blue walls with black and white!!!
Another cool eclectic grouping that looks great on a white wall.
I think I'm going to find some garage sales this weekend and see what I can find for some cheap frames. (And love the painting idea, Steph, to make them consistent!!!)
