Ah......life without a computer. At first, it wasn't so bad. It almost felt liberating to not feel the constant pressure to check my email, work on layouts to submit, read all the blogs on my list, etc... It was kind of like realizing that keeping up with the Joneses wasn't all that hot an idea anymore. At first, anyway.
And then it kind of settled into a feeling of restlessness. Almost like you know there's things that you ought to be doing, but you're not doing them, so you can't really concentrate on anything else as much as you should. And then that went away, too.
To be replaced with a constant feeling of frustration. And the realization that my computer wasn't just for keeping in touch. A phone works just fine. And I've had a lot of phone conversations this past week, believe me. And the computer wasn't just for scrapping. I was able to pull some older pictures off dh's computer and scrap them just fine. It wasn't until I went to pay my bills. And look up my father's phone number. And look up the kids' vacation schedule. And update a website for a client. All of that was on my computer. The dependency I had on it is almost enough to send me into panic attack mode. And, obviously, we have another computer here at the house. But, none of my passwords are on it, none of my bookmarks - it just isn't filling the void at all.
So, that's where I am right about now. Constant frustration. Add to that the realization that I don't like being a lawyer at all. Not one single bit. I'm ready to go to good 'ole McD's and get a job. What was I thinking? Seriously, corporate squeeze outs or share derivatives anyone??? Sound exciting??? Yeah, I didn't think so.
Exciting happenings around here, huh? Oh, and I didn't order an HP. And here's why. I've had 2 laptops. One was a Dell and lasted 6 years - survived being dropped twice, the kids' use of it as preschoolers, and only crashed when a chubby two-year-old walked on it. The other one was an HP. It had stress fractures in the lid after only 18 months of use, it lost all programs once (but they were recoverable), and finally crashed for good at less than 3 years old last week for no good reason. One minute I was typing. The next minute nothing. So, even though I hate Dell's customer service and a few other things, their track record with us was much better. I would have loved to get an iBook, but for the same specs as my Dell laptop, a Mac would have cost me $2500.00 and that just made me laugh. So, for now, it's a Dell.
And, seriously, if you had a Dell and it blew up and lost the last 3 years worth of pictures of your precious children or lost your wedding photos or was a total lemon, don't tell me, okay? 'Cause right now, I'm hanging on by a thread.
